LEARN MORE ABOUT CHOLESTEROL AND PRE-DIABETES TESTING

Why should I Get tested?

These rapid tests can identify in minutes if you’re at risk of diabetes or heart conditions - whether in the future or if you have a current diagnosis you don’t know about. It’s estimated that nearly a million people in the UK are unknowingly living with diabetes1  - could you be one of them?

The tests you need are on your doorstep.

Our tests will screen your levels of HbA1c (showing diabetes or prediabetes risk) and/or your cholesterol and total cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein ratio (TC/HDL ratio) to show the risk of heart complications. Your results will be provided in just minutes and you may select to have just one or both of the tests or take a full health check (Blood Pressure (BP), Body Mass Index (BMI), Diabetes, Cholesterol, height, weight).

What is cholesterol and why should I know how much I have?

Cholesterol is a fat that is carried around your body in the blood. It is vital that you have enough of it in your body for your body to work properly, but too much cholesterol can cause your arteries to become blocked, increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke. If your cholesterol level is high or the ratio is not ideal, you may wish to seek further advice from your general practitioner (GP). If you are overweight, losing weight should help reduce your cholesterol level.

The test will indicate your levels of cholesterol, of HDL (the “good cholesterol”) and your Total Cholesterol: HDL ratio.

  • Normal cholesterol should be below 5 mmol/L.
  • Normal High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) should be above 1 mmol/L.
  • Normal Total Cholesterol TC/HDL ratio should be 4 or below.

*If the results of your Cholesterol (Lipid Panel) test are outside normal ranges please visit your GP.

What is diabetes and why should I be aware of it?

Diabetes is a condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high. If your glucose levels are too high, you could be at risk of developing other serious health conditions. When blood sugar is very high, the extra sugar triggers a process that results in a huge amount of water loss from the body via excessive urination. This can lead to extreme dehydration and a life-threatening diabetic coma. Your potential risk of diabetes (which can be reduced!) will be calculated via a test at the Abbott Health Checks Van.

Type 2 diabetes is often linked to being overweight, being inactive or having a family history. Prediabetes occurs when you have blood sugar levels above the normal range, but not high enough to be diagnosed as having diabetes. If your blood sugar level is above the normal range, your risk of developing full-blown diabetes is increased.

Prediabetes is reversible; diabetes is not. It is very important for prediabetes and diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible, because they will get progressively worse if left untreated. HbA1c is known as glycated haemoglobin, and it shows your average blood glucose levels for the last 2–3 months.

  • Normal HbA1c level should be below 42 mmol/mol.
  • Prediabetes HbA1c range is 42–47 mmol/mol.
  • You may have diabetes if your level is 48 mmol/mol or above.
